This is my neighbor/friend, Mr Walter Meyers who I was very close to. We spent many hours together talking about our lives and the good old days. As a retired, photographer, he shared many photos that I loved. We would often walk his little dog, Titzy who really enjoyed my company. Walter survived for many years on only Social Security and occasionally selling photographs from his collection. He never mentioned any family so I assumed he was all alone and enjoyed sharing thoughts with me. I often surprised him with McDonalds burgers which brought a big smile to his face. I knew he was poor and I did whatever I could to help him. He was such a sweet guy that when he heard about my dog’s medical issues, he tried to surprise me with fifty dollars which I snuck back in his wallet.
Last week, on a usual afternoon visit, I arrived to find his front door slightly opened. I called for him with no response. Looking around, I entered his bedroom and found him lying on the floor with a lot of blood. Poor Titzy was laying next to him, quivering. My first reaction was to get Titzy and bring her outside to call 911. They arrived along with the local police and entered the house. I was asked a lot of questions by the police due to their suspicion of foul play with a blunt instrument. They found no evidence of theft but I dont know exactly what or if there were any valuables.
The coroner arrived but we don’t know the results yet.
The police special investigative unit searches for next of kin, but no results yet. I’m told they keep bodies for a period of time and if no one steps in, they are cremated and ashes are sent to a city owned cemetery where boxes and boxes of ashes are dumped in a giant hole.
It will take a lot of work on my part to make arrangements with a mortician to perform a decent memorial & burial. He always told me he wanted a pine box for burial and I want to grant his last wish.
So far, I have investigated charges for all this at about $25,000 dollars to include Coroner fees and the Police investigative folks looking for relatives. It’s a long, hard process. I plan on donating all his furniture and belongings to a local Senior Center. I am asking for any help that folks want to give me. God Bless.
