Empowering Burundi’s Batwa Community: A Call to Support Nawe Niwige

My name is Marlyne Nitunga, and I am reaching out to you on behalf of “Nawe Niwige,” a non-profit organization founded by four indigenous Batwa students in Burundi. Our mission is to promote education and bring positive change to our marginalized community.

The Batwa people, an indigenous minority group, make up roughly 1% of Burundi’s 12 million population. They face significant marginalization and discrimination within Burundian society. While these four dedicated Batwa students have managed to pursue university education, the majority of Batwa children lack access to quality education. According to recent statistics and Nengo Emmanuel, the current Batwa representative from UNIPROBA, a staggering 82% of Batwa have never attended school.

In response to this pressing need, the founders of Nawe Niwige—meaning “Learn too” or “You can Study too” in Kirundi—initiated their organization to support the educational aspirations of their younger siblings and peers. Demonstrating commendable dedication, these university students allocate 20% of their stipends to fund educational materials and fees for 20 boys and girls at the primary and secondary levels.

However, with their imminent graduation, these students will soon lose their stipends, jeopardizing the continuation of their noble efforts. We urgently need your support to sustain and expand their mission. Our goal is to provide continuous support for Batwa children throughout their twelve years of secondary education, aiming to reduce the community’s illiteracy rate by 30% by 2035.

By contributing to Nawe Niwige, you can profoundly impact the lives of indigenous children in Burundi. Your donations will directly fund school fees, uniforms, books, and other essential supplies, empowering these children with the education they need to become future leaders in their community.

Beyond financial contributions, you can further our cause by sharing our mission with your network. Encourage friends and family to join us in this critical endeavor. Together, we can significantly improve the lives of Batwa children, enabling them to realize their full potential.

Thank you for considering this vital cause. Your support is deeply appreciated.
