Advocating for Change: PATIENT A Public Service Announcement Against Gun Violence

Patient – Commercial Spot
Raising Awareness About Gun Violence Through New Eyes

Patient is an intense and engaging, cinematic docu-follow presentation set in a frantic yet well-prepared emergency room as all staff on hand work to save the life of their patient.
Using both docu-follow and a P.O.V. (point of view) camera angle, viewers will be taken on an emotional journey through the eyes of each character, including doctors, nurses, and the patient following the aftermath of a mass shooting and the arrival of the “victim.”
The seriousness and urgency of the situation will be felt by all as each staff member works diligently to save the patient’s life, all without revealing the patient’s identity for a shocking and poignant cinematic reveal at the end.
Viewers will finally feel a sense of relief as a “life” is saved thanks to the clinical preparedness and hard work of everyone involved…but whose life?

Who is the patient? And who are the doctors?
As the doctors and nurses celebrate their victory and remove their gowns and masks…it is revealed to the audience that the staff are not medical staff at all. But instead are made up of gun lobbyists celebrating their victory in saving yet another weapon despite the carnage and death it has caused.

“Well, at least we saved this one…again.”

Pan to the patient…it’s not a person. It’s not a victim. It’s a semi-automatic AR-15.

The Impact

In 2021, there were 48,830 gun-related deaths in the United States. That number includes 690 mass shootings which caused 705 deaths and injured 2,828 innocent people.
Unfortunately, gun deaths among children and teens rose 50% in just two years, and as of Aug. 1, 2023, at least 25,198 people have already lost their lives from someone choosing to pull the trigger on a gun.
That is roughly 118 people killed every day in the U.S., leaving behind loved ones and friends who are angry, confused, heartbroken, and want answers to what is behind all the violence.
The Patient will give the audience a glimpse into the power and money behind the lobbyists fighting to keep guns on our streets. This will allow more people to understand one of the reasons behind the continued gun violence happening across our country and give a louder voice to those fighting to stop it.

The People Behind the Film
Patient was created by a collective group of filmmakers to raise awareness about gun violence and its effects on the American people today. Brandon Mathis, producer, and director of Patient, adopted the script because of his personal experiences dealing with gun violence in the hopes that no one else has to suffer the same.

Focusing on who is fighting to ensure guns remain on our streets instead of the aftermath of the tragedy, will help to raise awareness about gun violence and create a loud voice for lawmakers to come together and finally take action.

It is our intent with the Patient to STOP these senseless crimes from happening in our schools, public areas, homes, businesses, etc., and to stop the loss of life across America.

Risks and Challenges
The Patient is an ambitious project that is a new take on the need to stop gun violence across America. Challenges faced will be ensuring the commercial is available to audiences on a multitude of media platforms which will spread awareness and change. This challenge, however, is alleviated through the support of people like you!
