Hi my name is Stephanie Gonder the mother of Coremiya Gonder who was injured at North Harlem Elementary School on February 24, 2016. Miya’s class was taken out to recess on the most windiest day of the year when a tree uprooted and fell on her and 3 other students. Miya got the bulk of the tree and was instantly taken away by ambulance to GRU pediatric icu in critical condition with two broken legs ,both ribs were broken, both ankles were broken,her left lung had collapsed and crushed her pelvic area.
Miya was transported from GRU to CHOA in Atlanta Ga on April 20, 2016 where she ended up getting an above the knee amputation on her right leg as well as her pelvis isnt healing. We were informed that we will be home June 16th but home for us is with my brother in a w bedroom apartment with his family and my children. Miya does need wheelchair accesibility housing because she will be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. We are in need of a home since it is getting crowded in this tiny apartment . We have tried housing in whom stated they have no units available, habitat for humanity who we have to wait on a home, 211, local EOA,
I had a realtor from Keller Williams who told me a good story about helping me but in actuality told me to rely on the funds from go fund me. Because of our frequent trips to therapy I can’t work and don’t know when i will be able to work because of how much impact that tree did on Miya’s legs, I don’t mean to be so firm but where is the help that i really need. I have been dealing with this same issue for months there has to be somewhere that will help me without giving me false hope like so many organizations have giving me.
The Harlem community has done great things in the past and for that I am grateful.
